THE DISMAL TIMES OF SQUAD IN WHITE

Why Do We Celebrate National Doctor's Day?

As human beings across the globe are struggling against the recurrent waves of pandemic and the doctors in their duty bound manner are fighting an ill-equipped battle to save the precious lives, the incidents of violence against the healthcare workers have grown up in epidemic proportions. The triad of poor healthcare infrastructure, negative image of doctors and the poor socioeconomic status of the patient are the major contributory factors to this increased violence. The healthcare infrastructure that should have been the priority of any running government has been neglected over years and when a patient who needs immediate medical attention is not given a bed or a ventilator, the family is bound to be infuriated, and their anger is let out on the first doctor they find. The doctors have become soft targets and are accused of being the ones responsible for lack of infrastructure when the fact remains that doctors are only supposed to provide treatment and not the healthcare infrastructure. They are probably made scapegoats of the system actually being run by the bureaucracy and policy makers. The divine status that was bestowed upon doctors not too long ago has been replaced by verbal abuses, harassment, intimidation and physical assaults. Despite all the odds, the doctors have always been on forefront to serve the mankind at the time of crisis and/or otherwise. Without caring for their own lives they have put every effort to provide a healing touch to the sufferers. Even in current times of pandemic they have not stepped back and have worked as the real warriors in addition to being saviours. It is disheartening to pen down the current state of affairs of these saviours especially on the day that is celebrated to recognise the contribution of physicians to individual lives and communities. Though the current scenario seems gloomy, there is always a ray of hope and that hope is of restoring the same old divine, transparent and pure doctor-patient relationship in times to come. It is possible only when the policy makers, media houses, doctors and patient own up their moral responsibilities and work in unison without accusing each other so to create a healthy and safe environment for one and all.
