Har Ghar Tiranga – Independence Personified

Har Ghar Tiranga – Independence Personified

India, being a multicultural, multi-ethnic and multi-religious society celebrates holidays and religious observances every other day. However, the day that is celebrated as a festival throughout the country and across all sections of society is an ‘Independence Day of India’. This day is celebrated on 15th of August every year and holds tremendous ground in the list of national days as it was only on this day that after a long and tiresome struggle for freedom India was declared independent from the clutches of British colonialism. On one hand, the day reminds us about the sacrifices of many freedom fighters yet on the other hand it emphasises upon us the dawn of new beginning and added responsibility.

India’s gaining of independence was a tryst with destiny and as the reins of control were handed over to the leaders of the country, there was a dawn of new beginning and birth of an era of deliverance. The leaders of the country started taking their own decisions, learned from the mistakes, moved forward and slowly and steadily turned the country into a mature and wise nation. From a country that used to depend upon British for leadership and guidance, India became her own master after independence and in less than three quarter of a century has become a model of successful and progressive growth to other nations.

To mark the celebration, every year the Tricolor is hoisted on 15th of August as a symbol of patriotism, honour and freedom for the country. Till date this hoisting was more formal, limited to institutions and the privileged ones with diplomatic immunity. However, on Aug 15th 2022, when whole country will be commemorating 75th year of Independence, each household will have a national tricolour flag hoisted on their roof top as a mark of successful mass movement to the scheme ‘Har Ghar Tiranga.’ This campaign, under the aegis of ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’, was possible only after an amendment in Flag code of India, 2002 last year and is an initiative by Government of India to invoke the feeling of patriotism, increase awareness and strengthen the relationship of every person with the National flag. As previously the hoisting of tricolour was more formal and limited to institutions only, this campaign truly signals the democratisation of flag. The hoisting of flag in each household will not only become a symbol of an act of personal connection to tricolour but also a means to transfer its ownership from the state to the people. However, at the same time hoisting should not be made compulsory to prove patriotism as the tricolor lives in the heart of every Indian whether he/she hoists the flag or not. The celebration should not become a burden on poor as it was seen that few miscreants tried to make the purchase of tricolor compulsory irrespective of whether one can afford it or not. It will really be an unfortunate and shameful act to extract the price of Tiranga by snatching the poor’s morsel of food.

‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ is a positive and a welcome step forward towards the unity and growth of our Mother India as the campaign signifies the fact that under this flag there is no prince and no peasant, there is no rich and no poor, there is no privilege and no religion.                           However, on ground there is a lot of socio-politico-economic disparity among the citizens of country and this campaign ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ should not be limited to the act of celebration only but should continue to bring freedom and opportunity to the common man, to the peasants and workers of India; to fight and end poverty and ignorance and disease; to build up a prosperous, democratic and progressive nation, and to create social, economic and political institutions which will ensure justice and fullness of life to every man and woman. The day when all these things happen we, all, as a nation building citizens will move from ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ to ‘Har Haath Tiranga’ with all hands working in unison and responsibly towards the welfare and liberation of our nation, which has one undivided heart and one indivisible spirit.
